COMMUNITY COMES THROUGH FOR FOOD BANK
WORD OF NEED FOR FREEZER REPAIR BRINGS IN THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, FREE SERVICE
By The Record
May 17, 2014
STOCKTON - Cold, hard reality was no match for the warmth of Stockton's giving spirit this week when the Emergency Food Bank's freezer failed Wednesday.
First, donations started coming in for the costly repair.
And by Friday morning, J.H. Simpson Co., a Stockton Heating and Air-Conditioning repair company, agreed to donate parts and labor to fix the freezer, which should be up and running by Tuesday.
"J.H. Simpson Co., a Stockton, local company, has agreed to make all the repairs at no cost to the food bank," said Matt Duaime, president of the board of the food bank. The parts have been ordered and delivered, and "the crew is all set and ready to go on Monday. We should certainly be at full strength on Tuesday."
Rebecca Knodt had made a desperate call for help on social media Wednesday, and the offers of help began to come in, from $2,500 from Laborers International Union of North America Local 73, to $500 each from the Stockton police and fire associations, to numerous contributions from citizens and groups totaling another $1,300.
The food bank, scene of long lines of people receiving holiday meal baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas, is well-known in the community. It provides packages to up to 300 households per day, supports 14 food pantries throughout the county and holds mobile farmers markets at 62 sites.
Most of what was in the failing freezer was hurriedly sent to the food bank's partners throughout the county, but they have little room.
The repairs were estimated to cost $8,000 to $13,000, Duaime said.
"This is the stuff that needs to be in Forbes magazine right here," Duaime said about Stockton's generosity. "This is our community pulling together in a small crisis. They absolutely rallied around it."
We want to Send a Special Thank You to the Emergency Food Bank of Stockton for there continued community efforts! We are so grateful for the Opportunity to partner with them to help Meet the needs in our Community! J.H. Simpson Company, Inc. Is proud to make the donation and repair the much need freezer!
